halloween goes to the ghouls

Halloween offers a great opportunity to transform your home into a place of mystery, a haunted house, or a page out of a fantasy book. Just think how you can fly bats and witches from tree limbs, string spider webs all over the yard, build tombstones or monsters or hide surprises for the costumed trick-or-treaters. You can wire sheeted ghouls to hover in the wind or light up a creature to loom out of the darkness. With technology knocking down the prices of interesting decor, inflatable scenes and audio decor is now within the reach of the ordinary homeowner.

Check your local stores for some of the imaginative and fun items on sale to turn your house into a playful haunted house or a magical monster-land.  Make your chosen item into the focal point of your decorations and set up supporting ornaments or structures that lead the eye to the main event.  At night the main feature can be lit up with a flood light and the rest of the Halloween effects can be accented with laser effects and strings of glowing color. You can focus on your front door or an area near the entry as the primary area for a focal point.  Or, if you have a large piece of property, create a whole scene in another part of your yard that is easily visible to passers-by.

If you want a longer-lasting display to cover both Halloween and Thanksgiving, consider going for the autumnal theme rather than the ghouls. You can bundle corn stalks, gather dried grasses, set out pumpkins, gourds and squashes and arrange dried flowers or succulent wreaths on your door. Try adding some pots of orange and rust colored chrysanthemums to your doorway and plant them in the garden to re-bloom next year after they fade.

We are entering into the holiday season.  It’s the best season for having fun decorating the landscape.  Halloween is the first of the big holidays perfect for outfitting your house.  So why not consider letting your landscape go to the ghouls?  It can be great fun for you and the whole family.
