how to BREATHE through the holidays

One would think that the simple act of breathing wouldn’t be hard to do. I mean, if you don’t breathe, well….you sorta die, so you would think that breathing is as natural as the produce aisle at Whole Foods.  WRONG!  Here’s a riddle…What do you do every minute of every day that you can’t  live without, but most often forget to do?breathe email

 Isn’t it true?

To breathe is to live. To breathe is to BE.  To breathe is to connect to your inner energy source.  If you would like to be more conscious of your breath, here are some tips that can help get you through the holidays, one breath at a time.

The first thing to do is to stop for a moment and breathe.  Yes, right now.  Breathe in through your nose, and out through your nose.  Slow down.  Take another breath.  Breathe in through your nose, and out through your nose.  Thank you. You have just spent a moment honoring yourself.

It really doesn’t take long to take a moment to breathe.  In through your nose, and out through your nose.  Just like they do in yoga class.  Yoga is all about breathing.  Most people think it is about flexibility and poses and connecting mind, body, and spirit, and that is very, very true, but it all starts with the breath.  In through your nose, and out through your nose.

Repititious, huh?   Hmmm, just like breathing.  In and out. In and out.  If you fill your belly up with air and release it, you can get a good workout for your abs.  If you add a Darth Vader sound at the back of your throat, you can increase your body heat.

Here’s something else you can try.  Put your hand in front of you and look at your palm.   Now focus on the spaces between your fingers.  What happens when you do that?  You can’t help but take a deep breath.  Focusing on the “spaces” helps you to breathe.  Breathing helps to oxygenate your body.  Oxygen relieves stress.  Relieving stress keeps you healthier.

While exercising, remember to breathe.  While doing holiday shopping, remember to breathe.  While driving, practice your breathing.  Take a moment to honor yourself, and breathe.

Now, do it again.

I’m breathing in, I’m breathing out, I’m breathing in, I’m breathing out.

    Thank you!

Great reminder, Harriette. Lately, I’m forgetting to breathe and I find myself gasping from time to time.

And I love the hand exercise. I use a similar technique to teach self hypnosis. Very relaxing. Thank you!
