am i a tweep?

Q-   Dear Suzie…..One word - Twitter. I see you are on it. I don’t understand it nor do I understand what all the fuss is about. Is it worth doing? Help me “get it”. – Clueless Tweep

A- Hello Clueless Tweep. At least you recognize you are clueless and you know a few words – you know Twitter and Tweep! You might not  understand me when I say: Follow me @suztoys, DM  and make it 140 characters or less. Pls #FF me to all your followers too. LOL It really is like learning another language but it doesn’t take very long to learn.

Why tweet (which means write things on Twitter)? It is fun, a way to vent, share, sell, market, make connections, friends, relate to others, follow famous people. Twitter can be whatever you want it to be. I have two accounts – one is purely for publicity, marketing and sales which is @suztoys and the other I use like a kind of online diary in a way – that’s @susanfujiki .

The way it works is that you write small snippets (140 characters or less) on whatever you want and as often as you want and people who are interested in you or what you have to say will read what you write. When you start you are all alone. There is just you. You search for people ” to follow” who you are interested in learning more about. Mostly at the beginning people follow (which means subscribe to what the person writes), famous people or people they know personally. Hopefully these people will follow you back if they are interested in what you have to say. Don’t hold your breath on the famous people replying though. I have found that the more people you follow the more followers you will get.

Another way to get more people to read what you have to say or find particular information you are looking for is by using the # key. One way I met people locally was by writing things like “What’s happening this weekend in the #SCV” so people who were interested in Santa Clarita might find me.   Another thing to do is to write about hot topics or other useless things that are “trending” (which means popular to write about) at the time so random people start to follow you. You may find yourself at various times writing ridiculous things for no real reason except to see what happens. Let’s say for instance you write “I love working out in the garden because nature is great!” – suddenly all the workout maniacs, nature lovers and gardeners will start to follow you – be warned though – when this happens most of the new followers will be “bots” – fake people – like spam.

Twitter for me started off as a marketing tool. I would post something every couple of hours to promote my business @suztoys to make people go and look at my website. I post news articles, reviews, incentives and the like to get people interested in what I have to offer them. Now it is more than that. I spend way more time with my @susanfujiki account keeping up with my new found Twitter family to vent what’s happening with the kids, hubby, laugh about something funny or just be stupid.

Dr Phil said on a show I saw recently that Twitter was used by people with low self esteem to get instant approval (or something to that effect) and to feel better about themselves. I don’t know about the low self esteem but I feel better about myself as I have realized that all the other mums I talk to suffer through the same day as me. Together we gripe, laugh, cry and celebrate through Twitter. I am glad to be there and so should you. Enjoy it tweep!
