Leah Pollack150x150Fall hues of orange and scents of cinnamon, but is your home ready for the Fall/winter season?  With new energy efficiency requirements on new construction and remodeling standards, energy bills may become the new disclosure during a real estate transaction and this may be an added method of comparison between your home and others on the market.

Below are a few tips to consider as you get ready for sweater-weather:

  • Replace your regular thermostats with electronic ones. They work to keep room temperatures constant and are programmable so you won’t need to remember to turn down the heat at night. If you have a programmable thermostat read the manual and set it up.
  • At night, close all your shades, blinds and drapes to keep the heat inside the house. Keep them open during the day to let in light… and heat from the sun.
  • If you have a fireplace, clean out the dust and debris from the last time you used it and ensure to close the damper once the fire goes out.
  • Weather-strip all doors and windows to keep the heat inside and the cold outside.

Understanding your energy use and its impact on your bill may warm you up to savings while you continue to enjoy your home.
