Next time you’re heading down the 126 stop in and check out their honey farm.  It is a family run honey of a business, owned and operated by the Bennett’s.  They have a “tasting room” and a live working bee hive in their store which is really interesting to see.

 If you are lucky, you might see Marcelino, the bee keeper, working with the hive and honey and sometimes he comes out and answers questions from the visitors. 

 The Bennett’s honey is kosher and organic (think apples and honey at Rosh Hashana next year) and they have an assortment of popular varieties that include orange,  sage, red clover and avocado.

 What’s all the buzz about? 

The Bennett’s Honey Farm uses a process called “gravity straining” which allows the honey to retain all of it’s natural minerals.  Although this process takes longer, the Bennett’s think it is worth it to bee a little “fussier” and offer you a better product.   You can find their honey in Lassen’s, Whole Foods and other specialty stores under the label “Topanga Quality Honey” & “Piru Canyon Honey”, or you can just bee line down the 126 to their farm and pick it up yourself.

Ever wonder why honey in your cupboard crystallizes and what can you do?

Honey in its raw and unfiltered state will crystallize. This is its natural process of the separation of the sugars from the nectar that is collected from the floral source. Example: Orange blossom.  (PS – If you have honey in your cupboard that doesn’t crystallize…you don’t have honey!) To get the crystal back to golden honey, don’t put your honey in the microwave.  If you do, you will kill all the enzymes that make the honey so healthy to begin with.  Instead, put the lid on tightly and soak the bottle in warm water.  This process will take longer than the microwave, but you will save your honey from a quick death.
