scv mayor’s message

June 2010 – Looking for something fun to do right here in Santa Clarita?  Look no further than your local park, pool or recreation facility, where a good time awaits young and old.

Through the City’s recreation programs, you and your family will enjoy a wide variety of low-cost programs for music, dance, art, cooking and more, offering educational classes, sports and group outings for all ages.    If you’ve got a birthday party or special event to plan, the City offers affordable Parkmobile party packages or summer Aquatic Center private parties for a truly memorable event.  Be sure to check out the City’s quarterly SEASONS Magazine on-line at www.santa-clarita.com.

One of the most popular youth summer programs is Camp Clarita, a day camp program for youth from preschool to ninth grade that is sponsored by the City.  Kids in the program can make friends, enjoy various trips and outings, and participate in park events, which are all tailored for their age group.  Camp Clarita staff are fully-trained and certified in first aid and CPR.  For more information on Camp Clarita, visit the website www.campclarita.com.

Right now, the City is under construction for the 25-acre Discovery Park in Canyon Country, the City’s first passive-recreation park located along the banks of the Santa Clara River.  This passive park will offer visitors terrific picnicking and bird-watching in a quiet, natural setting.  Look for the grand opening of the completed park site later this year.

Finally, as the weather gets hot, I want to encourage you to enjoy the City’s Aquatic Center located at the Sports Complex this summer.  The Aquatics Center offers a 25-meter dive pool, a 50-meter Olympic pool for competitions and practices, plus our family recreation pool, complete with a two-story high yellow slide and fun water play equipment.  Even the little ones will enjoy the “beach entry” and cool fun that only a swimming pool can provide.

Have a safe and happy summer!

Sincerely,

Laurene Weste
Mayor

As a prior Commissioner for the City Parks and Recreation Commission, Laurene has overseen the establishment of numerous parks, the preservation of thousands of acres of open space, and the construction of a cross-town trail system that is widely heralded as a crowning achievement of our young City.
As a Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Advisory Board Member, Laurene spearheaded the drive to save historic 800-acre Mentryville, which is the first oil town in California, for future generations.
As Director of the Santa Clarita Valley Committee on Aging, Laurene has helped safeguard the programs that assist our most experienced citizens and give them the dignity they deserve.
In the future, Laurene would like to see open space, roads built, sports fields created, Old Town Newhall revitalized, and an open space green belt completely surrounding the City. She would also like to see the preservation of the last unchanneled river in Southern California, the Santa Clara River.

  1. Gald to have the Mayor’s Message on Scene!

  2. sima bernstein says:

Since listening to radio ads re Awesometown, I was wondering if you consider yourself the mayor of Awesomtown or Santa Clarita. I think this ad campaign is confusing and misleading. I was wondering what your take was on it.

  3. Dear Ms. Bernstein,

Thank you for your email. As you may know, Awesometown is an advertising campaign for the Valencia Company. I am the proud Mayor of the City of Santa Clarita, encompassing the communities of Valencia, Canyon Country, Newhall and Saugus. I hope that helps to answer your questions.
    Best regards,
    Laurene Weste
    Mayor
