July 2010

Welcome to summer!  I love the hot weather and really enjoy getting outside to swim and hike.  I take full advantage of the City’s 60 miles of off-street trails and paseos, as well as local hiking areas like Towsley Canyon.  This year, I am working on swimming 100 miles, so at lunchtime, you may catch me over at the Aquatic Center doing laps!

This summer, the City will begin the second and final phase of the streetscape project in Old Town Newhall, adding new sidewalks, street furniture, landscaping and other amenities that are helping to transform this important area of our City, and setting the stage for new restaurants and businesses.   The streetscape on Main Street will be completed later this year. We are also underway with the construction of a new 26,000 square foot library at the corner of Lyons Avenue and Main Street which will serve as a focal point for Old Town Newhall. The new, two-story library is expected to open late next year.

Don’t forget that summer in Santa Clarita means it’s time for the City’s free           Concerts in the Park series.  Every Saturday night from July 10 through August   28, the City will host a free concert at Central Park, beginning at 7 p.m.   This year’s concert lineup features a wide variety of musical styles with something for everyone!  Food and beverages are available for sale.  We encourage you to bring your family, a blanket or chairs, and enjoy the sounds of summer at Central Park!  More information about the City’s free Concerts in the Park series is available on our website at: www.santa-clarita.com/arts/concerts.

Why do I keep hearing radio ads claiming Valencia is known as ‘Awesome Town’? Isn’t Valencia part of Santa Clarita? Does that mean Newhall, Canyon Country and Saugus are not awesome? Please explain.

    Dear Sima Bernstein:

Thank you for your inquiry. I think that Newhall, Saugus, Valencia and Canyon Country are most awesome! The advertising campaign to which you are referring (Awesometown) is actually being implemented and paid for by Newhall Land and the Valencia Company. The City of Santa Clarita has nothing to do with it. Many thanks for your email, I hope it helped to clear this up for you.

    Best regards,
    Ken Pulskamp
