mayor’s july message

July 2010 –

One of my favorite aspects of serving as your Mayor is attending the many community and charity events held regularly in Santa Clarita.  Our   community loves a good charity BBQ, wine tasting event, gala dinner, or festival, and it is truly a pleasure to be a part of the many wonderful programs and fundraisers sponsored regularly.  If you are interested in scheduling a member of the City Council to attend your special event, give us a call at 661-255-4395 to check our availability.

Later this month, we will be celebrating the grand opening of the 25-acre Discovery Park in Canyon Country.  This passive recreation park is located on the banks of the Santa Clara River and offers a serene and natural environment for picnicking and bird watching.   I am also working with interested members of our community to establish community gardens in Santa Clarita.  If you are interested in participating in this, I would love to hear from you!

I want to encourage you and your family to become a part of all that makes Santa Clarita special by actively participating in our community.  To find out more, check out the City’s community calendar available on the City’s website at: santa-clarita.com.  If you are hosting an event that is open to the public, please feel free to add it to the community calendar as well.

Best regards,

Laurene Weste
Mayor

Blogger Bio

As a prior Commissioner for the City Parks and Recreation Commission, Laurene has overseen the establishment of numerous parks, the preservation of thousands of acres of open space, and the construction of a cross-town trail system that is widely heralded as a crowning achievement of our young City.
As a Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Advisory Board Member, Laurene spearheaded the drive to save historic 800-acre Mentryville, which is the first oil town in California, for future generations.
As Director of the Santa Clarita Valley Committee on Aging, Laurene has helped safeguard the programs that assist our most experienced citizens and give them the dignity they deserve.
In the future, Laurene would like to see open space, roads built, sports fields created, Old Town Newhall revitalized, and an open space green belt completely surrounding the City. She would also like to see the preservation of the last unchanneled river in Southern California, the Santa Clara River.
