protect you & your food
With the beautiful June weather, we were lulled into thinking it was going to be a mild summer. But now August is here with a vengeance! Temperatures this week are expected to top 100 degrees. With this in mind, here are some tips for keeping cool in the heat & keeping your food safe to eat!
1. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER – though this seems pretty obvious, it is easier to become dehydrated than you might think. Carry water with you and drink often. Don’t wait until you are thirsty. It is generally recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day normally. Increase this in hot weather especially if you are active. There are many ways to boost your water intake throughout the day including eating water rich foods such as watermelon and tomatoes.
2. KEEP YOUR FOOD FRESH & SAFE – The high temperatures make it especially important to take precautions with food preparation and storage. Some tips: when shopping for groceries purchase your cold items last, keep meat and poultry separate from other items and drive straight home from the grocery store. At home – put away your cold/frozen items first, defrost foods in fridge, not on the counter; use an insulated cooler to transport food and keep the time that food is out of the fridge (at a picnic, bbq, etc.) to less than 2 hours & discard any food left after that.
3. GIVE YOUR APPLIANCES A BREAK DURING AFTERNOONS AND EVENINGS – Many appliances create heat and moisture making the air conditioner work harder. Use heat producing washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges and ovens in the early morning or late evening.
4. GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK – Avoid using the range or oven at all and let Dawn’s Dinners do the cooking for you! We can help you enjoy a healthy, delicious meal without all the work. Go to www.dawnsdinners.com for more info or to order today!
