fluff and fold

From time to time my mind dwells on how truly grateful I am to those that came before me who now decades after their inventions* are making my life a true joy! (like the blog on how much I appreciate the trash haulers and the system in place so that we don’t have plague, because of their good works!).. well this weekend I tossed the clothes in systematic fashion to be washed. I then multi-task, I cook, I check my email, I organize my files, I search property for clients. I notice the washing machine noises have stopped and toss the clothes into the dryer, repeating with more clothes. I follow-up with banks to help homeowners and as I am on hold, the dryer beeps I toss the clothes into the basket and repeat with more clothes. I hang up the clothes that crinkle fast and leave the remaining laundry to then sort and fold later to get ready for the week. Worse comes to worse, we end up picking through the basket for clean items, so items may go from basket to hamper to machine. But this weekend I folded every piece of clean laundry in the house. Afterward, I looked at my drawers and closets and saw the ample shirts, socks, shorts and underwear all tucked in and ready for me and my family to wear in the coming week and then it hit me… I am grateful for the washing machine and clothes dryer.

Really! How much less of laundry would I do, if I had to lug my dirties down to the running waterway behind the Valero on Soledad Canyon Road and Valencia Boulevard? Can you see me taking my wet clothes slapping the stain ridden garments against the rocks or beating them with a wooden club and then spreading them out on the grass to dry. Even if I was here in the 19th century, I would be lugging my wringer down to the same waterway, saving on the rock/bat beatings, but still a little inconvenient.

Thank you Louis Goldenberg of New Brunswick, NJ for inventing the Electric washing machine!
Thank you Brooks Stevens who developed the first electric dryer!
