hoops and real estate

I know very little about sports and my sports ability extends to stationary bicycling. But I love watching sports. I live vicariously through the players with their skill and ability. I marvel that they don’t flinch every time a ball is thrown at them, and when they come near a ball, they pick it up and throw it! Ah, the confidence!

Recently, I attended a Girl’s Basketball game with a Youth Sports League with the City of Santa Clarita. I didn’t know what to expect. I thought the ‘sports parents’ would be there, and I wouldn’t know what to say to them. I thought there would be hostile bouts of coach-parent and coach-ref interfaces that you see in the made-for-TV movies. I was ready to blog about a PSA on the perils of my experience during this event.

I a proud to report that I am now blog-less. First off, the players were good. They seemed to understand the game and some seemed almost ready for some serious looks at some college scholarships. The parents were soososososo supportive. Cheering each member who got the ball, ran with the ball, missed the ball, fouled out, or whatever was going on…. calling out encouraging chants ‘use the team’, ‘you got it’, ‘way to go!’. And the coach… I was there for the pre-game practice and there was equal drills for the team, each took shots, each took turns. During the game it was the same thing, from what I could tell… rotating players. But it was after the game that was actually inspiring. Each team member sat in the grass and the coach commended each player, providing constructive criticism to each person. The coach said things like, this was stellar and this is what needs improvement. We each should have managers that take the last few minutes of the day and say such things to us in such an affirmative manner.

This program is through the City of Santa Clarita (see the links below to learn more). Later in the day I ran into some City sports organizers, wearing the City-gear red shirts and a referee (yes, dressed like he worked at foot locker). I thanked them for being part of such a wonderful program and briefly shared my experience. It is nice that local people can team with local organizations to bring such camaraderie to our City through sports.
