design your master bedroom

Tami Smight’s Tips on Designing your Master Bedroom:

The key to a well designed bedroom is to select pieces that mix well, so the room looks like it has evolved over time… So mix different styles, textures and patterns.

  • Frame it right. Headboards are essential, or else your space ends up looking unfinished and temporary, like a bad dorm room. If you’re a person who reads in bed, consider getting one that’s upholstered. In my own home I have an upholstered bed with a canopy over it, to give the bed a sense of importance!
  • Build layers. Every bed needs comfy sheets, which is a really personal choice. People often forget about the bedskirts, which really make a bed feel more polished and clean. I like a tailored style with a simple pleat in each corner; the gathered ones look cute in a little girls’ room. In terms of layers, I do a fitted sheet, followed by a flat one, cotton blanket, and duvet. The combination works for all climates. It starts to look ridiculous when you have a million pillows taking up half your bed, so for a queen size, I like two euros propped up against the headboard followed by two stacks of two standard pillows in front.  That’s it!
  • Shake things up. To keep from looking like a hotel, it’s great to mix and match your linens and incorporate antique textiles, like an antique accent pillow. This gives a room a lot of personality and creates a relaxed feel–I never want a bedroom to come off as sterile. Rotating sheets seasonally is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to transform the look and feel of your bedroom. You don’t have to redo the entire scheme–just swapping out a throw or a couple pillows can have a lot of impact.
  • Treat yourself. People want their bedrooms to feel peaceful and serene, which lends itself to a soft palette of cream, grey, blue, or pink. Though in kids’ rooms it’s fun to have a jolt of bright color. Everyone wants a rug in the bedroom. It’s so nice to get out of bed and step onto something soft and warm.  You can layer an area rug over a broadloom carpet.
  • Close the door. If you like having a TV in your bedroom, put it in an armoire. I put all electronics behind closed cabinets–you’ll sleep better without the electronics visible at night.  As for night stands, make sure you have enough space to accommodate your essentials. For me this means a handsome clock, dish for jewelry, vase, photographs, books, and a beautiful candle. Having a drawer is also great so you can put away pens, hand lotion, remotes and leave the surface for pretty things.

nice ideas Tami. Our bedroom is very serene and dark, since my husband sleeps during the day.
