brazilian blowout 411
When people talk about this wonderful, newly discovered procedure so many people are having done to their hair, I have to laugh. The Brazilian Blowout is the “name” of a suave company that offers this Brazilian keratin protein treatment service. This procedure is in actuality a hair re-constructor, meaning it will change and reconstruct hair that may be unruly, frizzy, dry, over-processed, color treated, multi-cultural and unprocessed virgin hair. Naturally, everyone fits into one of these categories and everyone can get beautiful, healthy, shinny hair.
Besides Brazilian Blowout, other companies such as Cadiveu, Global, and Marcia Teixeira produce similar products. The original keratin treatment, from my research, was brought to the U.S. by Marcia Teixeira. A cosmetologist and native Brazilian, Marcia developed this treatment process in 2006. It is a family owned business with nationally trained distributors selling her products solely to licensed cosmetologists that complete a certification program. By being certified, you receive the thorough knowledge of the product. For instance, the hair must have a special clarification done before applying this procedure to remove any buildups (minerals or products). The hair is either dry or damp when the keratin product is applied. It is then blown into the hair and then flat-ironed (individual thin slices) at 450° . The product is either rinsed out or left in for four days depending on the brand of product. The procedure can take between 90 minutes to 3½ hours to complete. Prices vary depending on experience and the amount of time it takes for the stylist to do the procedure. The keratin treatment when in its purest state is extremely expensive and this is passed down to the client. Specials are given so people can experience how amazing the procedure is.
I need to make this clear to everyone; this is NOT a straightening treatment but an ultimate re-constructor. Andrea from People in Beauty, a distributor of Marcia Teixeira, states that too many hair dressers that attain similar products will claim that it is a straightener. This is why our cosmetologists that purchase our products must be certified. We only sell to hairstylists that complete our program. A simple test to see how your hair will respond to this procedure is how does your hair look right after a shower. This is pretty much how the keratin treatment will make your hair look when it is dry.
It is a must to use a sulfate free, UV protection and keratin induced shampoo and conditioner to prolong the results of the Brazilian keratin treatment.
By the way, this can be done on men too. Why shouldn’t they have gorgeous, shinny hair as well?
Important questions to ask your stylist.
- Does the product he/she uses for this treatment contain formaldehyde which is a preservative that is a known carcinogen?
- Is there specific home care I need to do to maintain my hair after the procedure?
PS. Do you have wavy or curly hair? I need 2 models for pictures to be displayed on the Marcia Teixeira website. They must have very curly or wavy hair so as to show that not everyone has stick-straight hair after the treatment.
