mayor’s august message
August 2010 –
Greetings! As the summer months wind down and children head back to school, I would like to encourage you to mark your calendar with a few terrific events the City has planned for the next couple of months.
It is my pleasure to invite you and your family to attend the City’s 16th Annual River Rally Clean-Up & Environmental Expo. The event is on Saturday, September 11, 2010, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Parking and the Expo will be behind the Soledad Shopping Center – 18386 Soledad Canyon Road, along the Santa Clara River Trail. Come help to preserve the Santa Clara River’s natural beauty, our local water quality, and variety of wildlife. Participants will be provided with gloves, collection bags, refreshments, along with giveaways for the first 1000 participants. Don’t forget to ride your bike to River Rally. The Santa Clara River Trail runs right by the clean up location. Visit the Environmental Expo, with over 20 vendors, to learn about recycling, air quality, pollution prevention, water quality, wildlife conservation, and much more! For more information visit our website at: www.greensantaclarita.com or call Environmental Services at (661) 286-4098.
“Yikes, a teenager lives in my house,” is the theme for this year’s Teen Scene Unplugged program, slated for September 29, 2010 at 7 p.m. at the Hyatt Valencia. Every year, the Blue Ribbon Task Force hosts an annual community information evening that is packed with information and useful resources to help parents and teens get through the crucial teenage years. Speakers address tough and touchy teen issues, including drug and alcohol use, social and academic pressure, teen stress, peer pressure, dating, family communication and connection, among others. Teen Scene Unplugged is free and open to the public. Parents, counselors, youth service providers, and community members involved in the education and well-being of our youth are encouraged to attend. For more information, please call the City of Santa Clarita’s Community Services Division at (661) 255-4965 or online at: www.santa-clarita.com.
Finally, it is my pleasure to cordially invite you to attend our annual State of the City Luncheon event on October 14, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Grand Ballroom. We have an interesting program planned and one I’m sure you will enjoy. Your $40 gets you a great lunch and a special, commemorative gift. More information and you can RSVP at www.santa-clarita.com . Call 661-255-4939 for more information.
I hope that you and your family take the opportunity to attend these unique community events. Thank you for your interest in the City of Santa Clarita. It’s because of the tremendous involvement and support of our community that Santa Clarita continues to be California’s best place to live, work and play!

As a prior Commissioner for the City Parks and Recreation Commission, Laurene has overseen the establishment of numerous parks, the preservation of thousands of acres of open space, and the construction of a cross-town trail system that is widely heralded as a crowning achievement of our young City.
As a Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Advisory Board Member, Laurene spearheaded the drive to save historic 800-acre Mentryville, which is the first oil town in California, for future generations.
As Director of the Santa Clarita Valley Committee on Aging, Laurene has helped safeguard the programs that assist our most experienced citizens and give them the dignity they deserve.
In the future, Laurene would like to see open space, roads built, sports fields created, Old Town Newhall revitalized, and an open space green belt completely surrounding the City. She would also like to see the preservation of the last unchanneled river in Southern California, the Santa Clara River.
