This week I went for a quick walk at the Placerita Canyon Nature Center and took a 15 min walk on the Heritage Trail. It amazes me that I was seemingly out of the middle of nowhere yet so close to the heart of the Santa Clarita Valley. I heard birds and saw scampering little lizards. I cleared my mind and connected with trees. How rejuvenating! There are many trails in the park: rough ones, steep ones, dusty trails too, but this trail has a sidewalk and a beautiful mural of oaks and streams. As I meandered along I can upon the end – and there it was! A plaque commemorating that on the very spot where I found myself was the FIRST recorded discovery of GOLD in California! Thoughts filled my mind of the course of events that set-off the Gold Rush, the beacon of inspiration, the source of hope for the time – and it happened RIGHT HERE in the Santa Clarita Valley!

If you have not been to the Placerita Canyon Nature Center’s fantastic facility – grab a bottle of water, some close-toed shoes and head over there! It is so close, you can hop on a trail on your way to Costco, or on your way home from work. They have bathrooms where you can change and are open till sunset!
