gourmet food trucks in scv
“Meals on Wheels” is taking on a new meaning in Old Town Newhall. If I didn’t see it with my own two eyes, I would never have believed that the gourmet chuck wagons are rolling into Santa Clarita.
Chef Debbie Lee’s Ahn-Joo Food Truck (Ahn Joo means “snack”) brought modern Korean pub grub to Old Town last night, right next to Brave New World comic book store on the corner of Lyons and Chestnut. You might remember Chef Debbie Lee, as
one of the alums of The Next Food Network Star. Ahn-Joo serves up a modern version of Korean pub food or sool jeep, a twist on the Korean food craze that’s so hot among food truckers, also known as “pub grub.”
Ahn Joo’s menu is divided into four parts: Small Grub ($3), Medium Grub ($5), Large Grub ($7), and Sweet Grub ($5). We began with an order of Kimchee Citrus Pork with
Roasted Fuji Apples ($3) that was delicious and full of flavor. Next we tried what Lee calls “the other KFC,” Korean fried chicken with garlic glaze and pickled daikon ($7), again, delicious and not greasy and there were 3 large drumsticks! We continued to try the spicy pickled cucumbers ($3) and the Modern Mandu which is Korean potstickers ($5) with a delicious dipping sauce. Yum! For
dessert…I must admit we were too full. But next time I am going to try the Fuji Apple Eggroll with ginger marscapone, and my husband had his eye on a coffee cupcake with bacon crumbles.
Don’t worry, the roving catering trucks will be back! Every week that is. Portlyn Polston, the owner of Brave New World, has arranged for a variety of food trucks to visit her store weekly Tuesday – Thursday. You may have to eat dinner a bit later than usual, but it’s worth the wait. Thursday night, Kogi BBQ (The King of Korean BBQ) is rolling up to Brave New World from 10:30 to midnight. Maybe I’ll see you in line.
On a side note, the gourmet food truck craze has hit prime time. The Food Network has a new show, The Great Food Truck Race, that premiers Sunday, August 15 at 10pm/9c that hopes to do for food trucks, what “Jersey Shore” did for tans!

[...] SCENE IN SCV blog briefly covers the food trucks that have started visiting Newhall’s Brave New World comic store on a regular schedule. AhnJoo was fantastic, as are Frysmith and White Rabbit, two of the other trucks coming regularly to BNW on weeknights! Which group were you last night? I was there with my family for about an hour or so at the beginning!
Just came back from Brave New World. Frysmith was there. Awesome smothered fries! We tried the chili fries with a hint of chocolate and the Angus fries smothered with Angus beef, caramelized onions, lime and cilantro!
