MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR LAURENE WESTE
September 2010

This has been a busy year for our City, with much in the way of progress achieved for our community.

Over the last several months, your City Council has been working on a myriad of projects, some of them long-standing, that have significant impacts on our community well into the future. In Newhall, we are well underway with construction of a new 26,000 square foot library in Old Town Newhall. The state-of-the-art library will serve as a focal point for Newhall and with its children’s library, teen resource area, dozens of public use computers and public meeting areas, and will be a wonderful addition to the area. In just a couple of months, the second phase of the streetscape will be complete and Main Street will be forever transformed. If you would like to see the “real time” progress of the library, check out our “Library-Cam” available from the City’s website at: www.santa-clarita.com.

This year, the City Council voted to spend over $8 million on street and road improvements city-wide. These “overlay” and “slurry” projects assure that our roadways are in top condition and provide a smooth ride, free from potholes. Continued maintenance is also cost-effective and assures a higher level of safety for motorists and bicyclists who regularly use local streets. For more information about the City’s on-going road improvement projects, check out the City’s website at: www.santa-clarita.com.

For all of you runners out there, you will be pleased to learn that the City is adding a new 3.1 mile cross course to Central Park in Saugus. If you are “green-minded,” the City is also working on our first-ever “Climate Action Plan,” in an effort to develop strategies to achieve emission reductions per State law. And for bicyclists, happy pedaling on new bikeways to be added this fiscal year, connecting additional residential areas, school and employment centers on the west side of town. For a complete rundown of the City’s 2010-11 budget, including other capital projects and grants, visit the City’s website at: www.santa-clarita.com.

Finally, I wanted to let you know that I have been working with our City staff on a community garden project. Very soon, we will be announcing the first garden project and I hope that there will be many more to come. If you are interested in participating in this exciting and green program, please let me know via email at: lweste@santa-clarita.com or by phone at: 661-255-4395.

Sincerely,

Laurene Weste
Mayor

As a prior Commissioner for the City Parks and Recreation Commission, Laurene has overseen the establishment of numerous parks, the preservation of thousands of acres of open space, and the construction of a cross-town trail system that is widely heralded as a crowning achievement of our young City.
As a Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Advisory Board Member, Laurene spearheaded the drive to save historic 800-acre Mentryville, which is the first oil town in California, for future generations.
As Director of the Santa Clarita Valley Committee on Aging, Laurene has helped safeguard the programs that assist our most experienced citizens and give them the dignity they deserve.
In the future, Laurene would like to see open space, roads built, sports fields created, Old Town Newhall revitalized, and an open space green belt completely surrounding the City. She would also like to see the preservation of the last unchanneled river in Southern California, the Santa Clara River.
