restaurant review: fish tail and vino 100

I heard about Fish Tail at 28104 Newhall Ranch Road, between Vino 100 and Chipotle, from  editor and owner of SceneInSCV, Marlene Bernstein. She mentioned that if you buy a bottle of wine from Vino 100, you could enjoy the wine at Fish Tail with no corkage fee and a free appetizer. I had to go!!! Read Marlene’s article this week for a full review on Vino 100 on Wednesday CLICK HERE ON WED. Like Marlene, I had never been to Vino 100 before. The franchise is owned and operated by Lil Lepore and Shari Frazier and most of their 140 or so labels are between $10 and $25. From the moment I walked in, I felt at home, comfortable and welcomed. Nothing pretentious there! As much as I am a foodie, I am not knowledgeable about wine. The prices intimidate me and I...

restaurant review: sabor

After hearing the news that Bristol Farms was closing, Dan and I ran over there to check it out.  We didn’t realize that they were closing at 7pm now.  We were starving and it was date night so we decided to try out Sabor Cocina Mexicana.  We had heard mixed reviews.  My neighbor and good friend told me that she loved the food and the brunch and another friend, who is a rather picky eater said he didn’t like it. We had a fabulous meal!  I must confess that I could sit and eat the chips, salsa and homemade corn tortillas all day!  The made to order, hot corn tortillas are amazing and reminiscent of our trip to a restaurant in Mexico up a dirt road and under a mango tree.  You know, the mom and pop out of the way, authentic Mexican restaurant...

restaurant review: barcelona tapas lounge

Peaking out from the remains of Barbacoa and Wild Thyme in Stevenson Ranch stands the all new, privately owned and operated Barcelona Tapas Lounge.  For those of you who do not know the location, it is across the parking lot from Chilis and behind Noah’s Bagels, Subway and Starbucks on The Old Road.  My husband and I have often discussed that location and the challenge any owner would have given the fact that the facility is rather hidden – even the sign is hard to see from the parking lot.  I do believe however, that this new restaurant is destined for great things. The inside does not resemble either of the previous occupants.  As you walk in, to the immediate left is a lounge, decorated with authentic Moroccan low-to-the-floor furniture and...

a few restaurant shout outs and some shameless pr

I had some great restaurant experiences this week. While the hubby and I were on “date night” on Wednesday night, we stumbled past the new Chipotle location where Poquito Mas used to be in front of the movie theater at Valencia Town Center.     There was a line out the door but a sign saying that they were opening on December 5th.  I nudged my hubby toward the line and told him I thought it might be a soft opening.  In restaurant terms, a “soft opening” is usually a few days before a restaurant officially opens its doors.  Usually, the food is free and it is a chance for all the employees to practice running the restaurant before they will be working “for real”. When we got to the front of the line, the guy told us that we...

restaurant review: the basil

restaurant review: the basil

Located at 22911 Soledad Canyon Road in Santa Clarita between Philly’s Best and the Mini Mart sits a little 11-table restaurant called The Basil.  Spouting Thai Fusion cuisine, this restaurant rivals some of my favorite San Fernando Valley favorites, Thai Temple and Thai Town. The Basil offers a wide range of appetizers from traditional Satay (chicken or beef on a bamboo skewer), Shrimp Toast, Larb (minced meat cooked with chili, shallot, lime juice and mint leaves and Papaya Salad to the most amazing soups.  My favorite is the Tom Kha or coconut lemon grass soup.  One can order a bowl or the “hot pot” which comes in  a hot steel bowl heated from a element below with a low flame keeping the soup warm at the table.  This soup is made with...

gogi house review

On Friday night, my husband, three of the four girlies and I had dinner at the Korean BBQ Restaurant Gogi House on Bouquet Canyon and Newhall Ranch Road.  As some of you know, I have been on a crazy diet since February in which I eat for my blood type.  For “O”s, this means no dairy, wheat (or anything with gluten) or corn.  Corn, or corn products like corn syrup is in so many things that it makes eating anything processed difficult – not that we should be eating processed food anyhow.    Gogi House is the perfect place to eat when you are avoiding dairy and gluten. For $19.99 for adults and $9.99 to 14.99 per child, we got all you can eat Korean food.  First a platter of traditional Korean appetizers was served including Kimchi, green...
