GMOs we want to know!
We are on the verge of winning the fight to eradicate GMOs (Genetic Modified Organisms) from the U.S. food supply. A California ballot initiative has been launched that requests a mandatory GMO labeling requirement in place. This, one would hope, would result in nearly all U.S. food producers discontinuing the use of GMOs to avoid the embarrassment (and cost) of having to print GMOs on their labels. This would be amazing! So what is a GMO? A general definition of a GMO is when a small piece of genetic material such as DNA from one type of organism is artificially inserted into another organism. This is not the same practice of growing hybrid plants where you cross a red flower with a white flower and get pink flowers. Genetic material is the...
eat your veggies rover!
So you’re having a hard time getting your kids to eat vegetables? Well, maybe you can set a good example when feeding your dog. Dry food can be so boring for a dog and many people mix it with wet canned food which can get expensive and, quite honestly, isn’t so healthy for your pet. Try this. Feed your dog pureed vegetables along with his/her dry food. It’s something that will most likely be lapped up and leave your dog licking his/her chops. Start with steaming some carrots (leftovers are good) and then puree them with a little water in a blender or a Bullet. Pour over dry food and mix. Try doing this, too, with steamed broccoli or cauliflower. (Just avoid onions and avocado because they don’t set well with dogs.) Maybe, just maybe, your children...
suffer from migraines?
Are you one of the estimated 40 million Americans who suffer from chronic headaches? Headaches are one of the leading causes of missed work or school. Maybe you’ve tried every over the counter remedy and even stronger prescriptions, but you still suffer. It may be connected to a hormone imbalance. Women who experience hormonal fluctuations often suffer with headaches or migraines just prior to the onset of menses, when there is a natural drop in progesterone levels. But headaches may also occur at ovulation, when estrogen and other hormones spike, or during menses itself, when estrogen and progesterone have bottomed out. You guessed it; the same hormones that give us cramps, breast tenderness, mood swing and those unstoppable chocolate cravings will also cause...
suncreen bad for dad?
Do you think you are doing something good for your self by using sunscreen? Perhaps you have no idea that innocent white lotion you’re slathering on your face and body is disrupting the very function of your internal hormones. Like all consumer products, some are good for you while others are potentially dangerous for your health and longevity. If your sunscreen contains OCTINOXATE, OXYBENZONE, HOMOSLATE, PARABENS or OCTISALATE, throw it away. These chemicals help protect you from ultraviolet rays, but the first four are potential hormone disrupters. Not cool for men and or women for that matter. Oxybenzone can lower your testosterone while PARABENS can raise your estrogen levels. Parabens go by many names such as methylparaben, butylparaben,...
hair & skin problems…think hormones!
Are you experiencing greater than normal hair growth in unwanted areas? Or even more disturbing, are you experiencing hair loss? Is your skin dull, dry, or sagging? Do you have more acne than a teenager? All of these conditions may be directly related to your hormones. When estrogen levels drop in a woman, her skin can start to sag and wrinkle. Estrogen is like the glue that holds it all together. It’s also the hormone that gives your face that healthy glow. Inadequate estrogen has health consequences bringing with it an increased risk of osteoporosis, heart disease as well as mood and memory problems. When testosterone levels are elevated or wildly fluctuating, the skin will start to experience breakouts or full blown acne. Another side effect is...
breakfast made easy
Many people skip breakfast either because they are in a rush or they simply don’t like to eat in the morning. But skipping this important meal can throw off your blood sugar levels for the rest of the day, causing mood swings. Eating breakfast can improve mood, memory and energy throughout the day. Eating breakfast means “breaking” the fast. Eating after a good night’s sleep normalizes glucose levels and enhances metabolism that helps to regulate appetite for the day. Missing this meal increases the temptation to binge on junk food the rest of the day. Hopefully I’ve convinced you to start eating breakfast. So what about those of you that are limited on time? I have a solution for you. The recipe I’m about to share with you is packed full of...
