Seniors have given so much, not only to Santa Clarita, but also to our nation. They are an integral part of our City and should be cherished, respected and cared for by the community. The City of Santa Clarita is committed to providing a high quality of life for its senior population through programming, advocacy, camaraderie, and assistance.   Each year, the City provides financial and other assistance for local seniors including funding for transit programs, housing grants, informative workshops, educational seminars, assistance to meals on wheels, and much more. As part of the City’s Fiscal Year 2011-2012 budget, the Santa Clarita City Council provided over $667,000 from a variety of funding sources for senior services administered by the Santa Clarita...

are your memories fading?

are your memories fading?

Recently I started looking through boxes of old photos and realized regretfully that my photos are starting to fade, especially the Polaroid’s.  This got me thinking about my 30th birthday video that we had stored up in our attic (and who knows how many others) oh so long ago.  Once I got them down, I pulled out my videos poured myself a glass of iced tea, sat myself down in the den and called my husband on the intercom to come set up the VCR for me so I could cuddle up with my memories.  My husband intercomed me back saying that we haven’t had a VCR player in the house for about 4 years now.  The world moved onto DVD and my memories were stuck on video cassettes. The moral of the story is that if you can remember video taping your little cutie pies riding...

city manager message 3/12

Hello!   Crime in the City is down.  Use of our libraries is up.  Building permits have increased.  Sales tax revenue is up.  I believe these early indicators mean that 2012 will be a good year for Santa Clarita.  At City Hall, we are, as always, busy helping to make Santa Clarita an amazing place to live, work and play.   As I drive through our City, I am very pleased with the high quality of beautification projects we’ve been able to complete over the last few years.  Most recently, we finished a four mile center median project on Soledad and another on Bouquet Canyon in the Saugus area.  Right now, we are working on another beautification project at one of our City gateways—Lyons Avenue at Interstate 5.  These projects go a long way...

158 miles of new bikeways

158 miles of new bikeways

The unincorporated Santa Clarita Valley would become a whole lot more “bike friendly” if the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approves a plan Tuesday that would add 158 miles of bikeways in the SCV over the next 20 years. The new Bicycle Master Plan would replace the county’s 1975 plan and add 832 miles of new bike lanes, paths and routes in unincorporated county areas at a cost of $331 million, to be funded partially through future state transportation grants. While the city of Santa Clarita already maintains an extensive network of bike routes inside city limits, the county maintains just 3.3 miles of bikeways, all in Stevenson Ranch. The new plan would dramatically change the equation with a 48-fold increase in the number of county-maintained...

seeking local artists

As part of the City’s Art in Public Places program, a vending machine full of art for purchase will be located at upcoming City events. The City of Santa Clarita is seeking artists to create sellable artwork made available through the City’s new Art2Go program, which benefits youth activities, assemblies, and contests to promote arts education in local schools. Artists interested in being a part of this program are asked to submit four photos of their existing art pieces for consideration by Wednesday, February 15. If selected, artists must purchase their own materials to create 10 works of art to be available and sold as part of the Art2Go program. Artwork cannot be larger than 5 ¼” x 6” x 4” and must include printed information about the piece or...
