try the pool!
Yes it can be done! With the weather being so nice and warm why not use your beautiful pool to get some exercise. We live in southern California; why not take advantage of water exercises. You’ll already be in it anyway, right? Whether you are in the pool, lake or the ocean, being in water is so beneficial for the entire body! You can enjoy a cardio workout, get some strength training in, and water exercise (especially swimming) can really put focus on breathing, which is great for your mind, body and spirit!
The pool is a great place for people to get a workout for pretty much anyone, but especially for people with impaired joint motion or arthritis, decreased strength or stamina, sedentary, or anyone looking for a low impact exercise program. So if you have bad joints… you have no more excuses not to get some exercises in and you don’t have to worry about getting “sweaty”.
To warm up you can start with marching and walking. I like taking my group in a circle to create a “whirlpool” affect and then switch directions to have the added resistance, which is great to get your heart pumping, works your core, and helps burn lots more calories!
For strength there are leg lifts to the front and to the side (never cross the midline with hip replacements), kicks front and back, or knee lifts. For the upper body there is trunk rotation, baseball swing, golf swing (which will help you with your game) arm circles, lifting your arms from under water to clap your hands over your head, push ups on the side of the pool, or pushing your body up half way out of the pool at the edge.
In a group dynamic I have the participants playing games. I did this for my seniors and they love it. It has them laughing and it really brings the social benefit to group exercise. The tools you will need are: pool noodle, ping pong ball, hula hoop and a beach ball. You can play “musical chairs” or “hot potato” with the noodle or beach ball, push the ping pong ball across the pool (without touching it) basketball using the hula as the hoop and beach ball, and even the “hokey pokey” is always a favorite. These and many others have everyone laughing and really enjoying the workout! I would encourage anyone who wants to start an exercise program, but don’t feel strong enough for traditional exercises, to start in the pool. As with any exercise program, especially if you are new, check with your doctor first. Have a great summer.
